Bangladesh's cricket icon, Shakib Al Hasan, may finally get his wish of playing his farewell Test match on home soil. Shakib’s dream of concluding his Test career at the iconic Mirpur Stadium is looking more likely, thanks to support from top officials in the Bangladesh government and cricket board. The Youth and Sports Advisor, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, has expressed his desire for the veteran all-rounder to have the chance to bid farewell to Test cricket in front of his home crowd.
"He has contributed greatly to Bangladesh cricket, and I sincerely hope he gets to play his final Test here in Bangladesh," said Bhuyain during an event at the Women's T20 World Cup.
This backing follows Bhuyain’s earlier comments suggesting Shakib needed to clarify his political standing before security could be guaranteed. However, the stance has softened, with officials now focused on providing the necessary protection to allow Shakib to safely participate in what could be his final Test series.
Shakib’s brief foray into politics, including winning a parliamentary seat, caused a stir, but it appears his political career won’t stand in the way of him having a fitting send-off in the cricketing arena. Despite being accused in a legal case recently, top government officials have shifted their focus to ensuring Shakib's safety, with security plans being put in place for his potential farewell Test.
BCB president Faruque Ahmed also changed his earlier position, stating that the board will take responsibility for Shakib's security on and off the field. Shakib is expected to make a final decision soon on whether he will participate in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa.
