Bevan’s Legacy Lives On: Inducted into Australian Cricket Hall of Fame | Reddy Anna

February 2025 - News Digest

February 3

Michael Bevan has been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, becoming the third inductee this year after Michael Clarke and Christina Matthews. This induction is historic as Bevan is the first player to be honored since the governing criteria were revised earlier this year.

Bevan, renowned as a master finisher, was one of Australia's most formidable white-ball players. Across 232 ODIs, he amassed 6,912 runs at a staggering average of 53.58, which was the highest ODI average at the time of his retirement in January 2007. His contributions were instrumental in Australia’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup triumphs in 1999 and 2003.

Among his many iconic performances, Bevan's 78* against the West Indies at the SCG in 1996 remains etched in cricketing history. Australia, reeling at 38 for 6, successfully chased down 173, thanks to Bevan’s composed brilliance, culminating in a match-winning boundary off the final ball.

With this induction, Bevan becomes the 66th member of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, further cementing his legacy in the sport. His influence extends beyond just statistics, as he set a benchmark for finishers in ODIs.
